Analog circuits are difficult to miniaturize and don't lend themselves to being automated; however the world around us is still stubbornly analog in nature! Sound waves, temperature, light and a host of other physical quantities are all analog. Hence the design of analog and mixed-signal circuits is relevant in modern sub-micron processes everywhere there is an interface between the physical world and information systems. Sometimes the design of a particular application may still be more economical as an analog circuit; other times the analog or mixed-signal function is an enabling feature in a highly integrated system.
