The Jerusalem Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (JSPCA) was originally opened in the 1940s and the organization has operated rescuing hurt and abandoned animals since the British mandate. The JSPCA is Jerusalem's largest animal shelter organization. The Society runs a shelter in the Atarot industrial area of Jerusalem - a shelter which has been in continuous operation since 1970. We never refuse an animal if it is hurt, or in a dangerous situation. Our shelter is a rescue shelter: All animals are checked by our vet, vaccinated and sterilized before adoption. we also have volunteers to help with socialization and leash training to improve their chances. since many animals will spend several years with us the dogs are in large open air yards allowing them to live relatively normal lives, and the cats are free ranging. Our shelter is generally filled to capacity. we need to adopt out to be able to accept more animals so this is a major effort for us. At any given time we house up to 200 dogs and 150 cats. In addition to our shelter, we have a vet clinic, with emergency capabilities. We believe the only way to help deal with the current pet overpopulation is through massive spay/neuter program. To promote pet sterilization we use educational programs, written materials and a low cost spay/neuter clinic run by the SpayIsrael organization on our premises. we offer our services to pet owners as well as people wishing to sterilize street cats. The JSPCA is a registered non-profit organization.
