The Russian Compoun is one of the oldest districts in central Jerusalem, featuring a large Russian Orthodox church. The compound was built between 1860 and 1890, with the addition in 1903 of the Nikolai Pilgrims Hospice. It was one of the first structures to be built outside the Old City of Jerusalem.Sergei Building - Corner of Heleni HaMalka and Monbaz Street. Courtyard structure with a Renaissance style imperial tower, named for Grand Duke Sergei (1857–1905), brother of Czar Alexander III, then President of the Russian Orthodox Palestine Society. Completed in 1890 by architect Frank Gia it was built for pilgrims from the Russian nobilityas "Sergej Imperial Until 2008, it housed offices of the Agriculture Ministry and the Society for Preservation of Israel Heritage Sites (SPIHS). The last tenant, the SPNI, will be moving out in the fall of 2012. The Russian government plans to restore the site and use it to serve Russian pilgrims.
